John Groce is a college basketball coach who is currently the head coach of the Akron Zips men's basketball team. He was born on September 7, 1971 in Danville, Indiana.
Groce began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Taylor University in 1996. He then went on to serve as an assistant coach at North Carolina State, Butler, and Ohio State before landing his first head coaching job at Ohio University in 2008.
During his time at Ohio University, Groce led the Bobcats to two NCAA Tournament berths and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2012. He then moved on to become the head coach at the University of Illinois in 2012, where he coached for five seasons before being fired in 2017.
In 2017, Groce was hired as the head coach of the Akron Zips. Since taking over the program, he has led the team to multiple winning seasons and postseason appearances.
Groce is known for his high-energy coaching style, focus on player development, and ability to recruit top talent. He is respected in the college basketball community for his knowledge of the game and his passion for coaching.
